I have a variety of experience in the information science and public library field. After serving four years of active duty in the U. S. Air Force, I transferred to the the U. S. Air Reserves. During this time I relocated to Las Vegas, NV. I began working in the Human Resources Department of the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District http://www.lvccld.org/. Five years later, I was promoted to the position of Computer Center Department Head at the Spring Valley Library. This position allowed me to gain experience working for a public library. Along with managing a computer lab, I also taught classes on computer hardware and Microsoft software. The greatest part about this position was the wonderful opportunities I had to fill in as a substitute librarian in both the Adult Services and Children’s Services departments.
During my MSIS graduate program with the University of Tennessee, I’ve had the opportunity of participating in two practica. These practicum assignments allowed me to work exclusively as a librarian at two library locations. The first practicum occurred in Spring of 2014. This practicum was located at the Spring Valley Library in Las Vegas, NV. This is my place of work and although I was familiar with its operation, I had no experience working in a Children’s Department. I desperately wanted this obtain this skill set and I’m grateful for the training that I received.
The second practicum was performed at the Enterprise Library also located in Las Vegas, NV. I was able to learn the layout and operations of a completely different library. I also became proficient in a ready reference collection. By the end of this practicum in which I also assisted with programming, I created my own ready reference collection that I currently use at my job.
I encourage visitors of my website to view my detailed practicum reports from the Experiences tab. I would like to personally thank the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District and the University of Tennessee School of Information Science for an unbelievable experience that will benefit me during my public library career.
After completing my degree:
In 2016, I accepted a career promotion as a Supervising Librarian for the Solano County Library solanolibrary.com. I supervise the Vacaville Public Library – Town Square branch solanolibrary.com/vacaville-town-square. This have given me an increased responsibility in management and training. With the help of my wonderful staff, we offer a variety of diverse and unique programming. We also provide resources and services that directly support the community that we serve.
